Irina Shayk’s Response to the Cannes Dress Code? Elegant, Demure, Vintage

The annual Cannes Film Festival is where the A-list stars dress their best—just ask (the now blonde!) Bella Hadid and Irina Shayk. But this year’s new dress code has thrown a spanner in the works, prohibiting nudity and the more voluminous, dramatic silhouettes. While Hadid has both tested the bounds of and played up to the new rules, Shayk has taken a distinctly refined approach.

The supermodel stepped out for the evening gala screening of Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, wearing an Yves Saint Laurent fall 1998 black velvet gown, with an undulating faille skirt and boatneck, sheer tights, and black stiletto pumps. The vintage moment was a marked changed from Shayk’s past red carpet appearances: Known for dramatic cut-outs, sheer fabrics, and clingy silhouettes.

That same day, Shayk was photographed at the storied Hotel Martinez in a sharp white suit—while the blazer had a plunging neckline, the suits tailoring and Shayk’s accessorizing kept it low-key. She wore black flip-flops and a dense diamond necklace, and carried a small white clutch bag.

While it remains a glitzy affair, Shayk has brought some of her more casual looks to the Croisette. Yesterday, she was photographed on the promenade in a chartreuse, chiffon dress, paired with white Nike sneakers—a go-to summer combo, even for supermodels. The in-between moments of Cannes can provide some of the best street style of anywhere—thinking back to Bella Hadid eating ice-cream by the sea in a keffiyeh dress that honored her Palestinian heritage at last year’s event, or this year’s Audrey Hepburn-inspired look. More is surely to come from Shayk.
