Pierpaolo Piccioli Is Going to Balenciaga

Balenciaga’s search for a new creative director has ended.

On Monday, the Kering-owned house announced that Pierpaolo Piccioli will be stepping into the role, effective July 10. He replaces Demna (Gucci’s new artistic director), whose exit from the brand was announced in March.

“Balenciaga is what it is today thanks to all the people who have paved the way,” Piccioli said in a press statement. “In all its phases, while constantly evolving and changing, it has never lost track of the House’s aesthetic values. What I am receiving is a brand full of possibilities that is incredibly fascinating.”

He continued, thanking Demna for honoring founder Cristóbal Balenciaga’s legacy while developing a new point of view, and is excited to now “shape a new vision of the Maison.”

Piccioli’s appointment comes nearly a year after he stepped down from his role as Valentino’s creative director. While at the French house, Piccioli (and Maria Grazia Chiuri, who was his co-creative director until she joined Dior in 2016) received both industry and cultural acclaim: Within his tenure, the brand formed ambassadorships with stars like Zendaya, Lewis Hamilton and BTS’ Suga, strengthened its reputation as a red-carpet favorite and propelled the Barbiecore supertrend thanks to its vibrant “PP Pink.” Now, it’s up to him to replicate that success at Balenciaga.

“I’m excited to begin this new era at Balenciaga with Pierpaolo,” said Gianfranco Gianangeli, Balenciaga CEO, in a statement. “His creative vision will thrive, and he will perfectly interpret the legacy of Cristóbal Balenciaga, building on the House’s bold creativity, rich heritage and strong culture. With the expertise of our teams and the dynamic creative energy that has historically driven Balenciaga, I look forward to what we will build together.”

Piccioli’s debut collection with the brand will be for Spring 2026, during Paris Fashion Week in October.
