Onsted claims D3 boys regional track title, Adrian Madison ties for second


ADRIAN – Adrian Madison High School played host to the Division 3 regional track and field meet this past week, and six teams from Lenawee County made the trip looking for postseason glory.

The Onsted boys track and field team dominated the field, winning the regional title in runaway fashion, scoring 128.5 points. Erie Mason and Adrian Madison finished in a tie for second place with each team hitting a score of 107.

Other local teams include Clinton in fifth place; Hudson and Blissfield in a tie for ninth place; and Sand Creek in 11th place.

Here are the results for each local team and who they will be represented by at the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) state finals.

Onsted Wildcats (regional champions)

Onsted will advance to the Division 3 state championship as a team after winning the regional title. Athletes advancing for Onsted in their respective events are the following:

Aidan Paquin, Sr. – Paquin qualified in two individual races for Onsted, winning the gold medal in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.18 seconds followed by a second-place finish in the 200 in a personal best time of 22.74 seconds.

Griffin Amthor, Sr. – Amthor earned a trip to the state finals finishing just behind his teammate Paquin in the 200, taking third place in a time of 23.01 seconds, a new personal record.

Mitchell Hiatt, Sr. – Hiatt earned a pair of individual trips to the state finals as the senior cornered the market on the long distances. Hiatt took the victory in the 1,600-meter run in a time of 4 minutes, 28.13 seconds and again bested the field in the 3,200-meter run, qualifying for the state finals in a time of 9 minutes, 44.03 seconds.

Chase Fetzer, Jr. – Fetzer earned a spot in the state finals in the hurdles, taking fourth place in the 300 hurdles in a personal best time of 42.11 seconds.

Onsted qualifies all four relay teams to state finals – The Wildcats managed to get every single relay team on to the state finals. The 400 relay team of Connor Kish, Chase Fetzer, Amthor, and Paquin took third place in a state qualifying time of 44.40 seconds; the 800 relay team of Fetzer, Paquin, Kish, and Amthor took home the gold medal, winning the race in a time of 1 minute, 31.84 seconds; the 1,600 relay team of Hunter VanZandt, Mason Cheeser, Fetzer, and Amthor finished in third place in a time of 3 minutes, 34.47 seconds; and the 3,200 relay team of Hiatt, James Bayes, Nicklas Holmes, and Chris Durfey took second place in a time of 8 minutes, 27.52 seconds.

Mason Cheeser, Jr. – Cheeser qualified for the state finals in two field events, starting with a championship win in the high jump with a jump of 6 feet, 2 inches. Cheeser also qualified for the state finals in the long jump with a personal best jump of 20 feet, 5 inches, good enough for third place.

Adrian Madison Trojans (team runner-up)

JaLonn Borders and Nathan Mullins – The duo of Borders and Mullins helped pace the Adrian Madison machine at the regional championship, taking first and second in the 110 hurdles. Borders took gold medal honors in the hurdles in 15.64 seconds followed by Mullins who took second place in a time of 16.02 seconds. Borders also earned a spot in the state finals in the pole vault, taking second place with a vault of 13 feet, 6 inches.

Derrell Tillman, Soph. – Tillman wrapped up a regional championship in the long jump, winning the gold medal with a jump of 20 feet, 10.5 inches.

400-meter relay team wins gold – The 400-relay team made up of Elijah Crete, Wade Garza, Borders, and Dominic Velasquez won the gold medal in a time of 44.05 seconds, punching their ticket to the state finals.

Trenton Fetter, Jr. – Fetter battled his way to a pair of state final qualifications in the long-distance races. Fetter took second place in the 1,600 in a time of 4 minutes, 33.90 seconds followed by another runner-up finish, this time in the 3,200 in a time of 9 minutes, 49.10 seconds.

Clinton Redwolves

Mason Brodie, Sr. – Clinton’s regional effort was paced by Brodie down in the throwing pits as the senior qualified for the state finals in both disciplines. Brodie won the regional championship in the discus with a throw of 151 feet, 7 inches while also taking silver in a runner-up finish in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 6.75 inches.

Elijah Turner, Jr. – Turner qualified for the state finals in the high jump after finishing in second place with a jump of 6 feet, 0 inches.

Brendan Benschoter, Jr. – Benschoter advanced to the state finals in the long jump thanks to a runner-up finish with a distance of 20 feet, 10.5 inches.

Hudson Tigers

Grayson Bills, Jr. – Bills ran away with the gold medal in the 300 hurdles, winning the regional championship and punching his state finals ticket in a time of 41.42 seconds.

Colton Natale, Jr. – Natale dominated the shot-put pit, earning a trip to the state finals with a gold medal winning throw of 47 feet, 8.25 inches.

Blissfield Royals

Jackson Vandenbusche, Sr. – Vandenbusche punched his ticket to the state finals with a runner-up finish in the 800, taking second place in a time of 2 minutes, 0.89 seconds.

Michael Weidmayer, Fresh. – Weidmayer earned a trip to the state finals with his effort in the 3,200-meter run, taking third place in a time of 9 minutes, 54.90 seconds, a personal best.

3,200-meter relay team – The Blissfield 3,200-meter relay team made up of Ian Waddell, Braedyn Tennant, Evan Vore, and Vandenbusche took fourth place and earned a state finals trip in a time of 8 minutes, 31.87 seconds.

Sand Creek Aggies

The Aggies did not have a state qualifier on the boys side of the regional. Sand Creek had one athlete win a pair of medals at regionals as junior Brayden Ruff took fifth place in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 4 inches and fifth place in the discus with a throw of 121 feet, 0 inches.

The Division 3 state finals will take place on May 31 at Kent City High School in Kent City.
